1 in 3 students had sex, says study made a decade ago

KUCHING: One in three female secondary school students who took part in a Universiti Malaya study a decade ago admitted they were sexually active.

"If that was a decade ago, imagine what it would be like today," child psychology researcher Datuk Dr Chiam Heng Keng told the New Sunday Times at the Sarawak Women's Bureau seminar on "Training our Children on Personal Safety".

At the time of the study on the habits of girls aged 12 to 18, Dr Chiam was professor of Social Psychology at the university. She is now a Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) commissioner.

In her talk on "Facing Today's Realities", Dr Chiam said: "It gives them (the girls) the feeling 'I'm very cool because my friends are also doing it', and it must be right because everyone is doing it."

Dr Chiam said since having sex was common among students then, she "wouldn't be surprised if pupils in primary schools would do it, too, in time to come".

She said the study found that some had sex for pleasure, but most prostituted themselves for the money to buy expensive goods, such as handphones and branded clothes.

Surprisingly, she said, these students did not go to parks or other public places to have sex.

"They did it at home."

So Dr Chiam advised parents to be more alert when their children brought home friends of the opposite sex "to study". She said it was best not to let them use the bedroom to do their work.

British boy becomes father at 13

British boy becomes father at 13

LONDON (AP): He's 13. He scarcely looks 10. And according to a British tabloid, he's a father.

Baby-faced and only 4 feet (1.22 meters) tall, the boy, Alfie, was just 12 when he impregnated Chantelle, now 15, The Sun reported Friday. Shown in a video posted Friday on the tabloid's Web site, the diminutive Alfie takes the newborn girl in his arms.

Asked what he would do to support the child financially, Alfie asks in a small, high-pitched voice, "What's financially?"

The girl was taking birth control pills but missed one, the newspaper reported. Friends and relatives left the family home near Eastbourne, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) southeast of London, Friday without speaking to reporters gathered outside. The teenagers could not immediately be contacted.

The Sun did not say whether any tests were conducted to prove the boy's paternity. The paper did not offer any immediate comment when asked whether it had paid the family for the story.

Police and child services in Eastbourne, in southeast England, said in a statement that they were "aware of a 14-year-old girl that had become pregnant as the result of a relationship with a 12-year-old boy," adding that they were offering support to both young people.

Alfie's front page picture has sparked renewed debate about teen pregnancy in Britain. The country has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Europe, and government figures show that about 39,000 girls under age 18 became pregnant in 2006.

More than 7,000 of those girls were younger than 16.

"I don't know the individual details of the case, but of course I think all of us would want to avoid teenage pregnancies," Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Friday.

Britain had 27 births per 1,000 women aged 15-19 between 2000 and 2005, according to a report published by Population Action International. Comparable figures are 10 per 1,000 for Spain, 8 in 1,000 for France, and 5 in 1,000 for The Netherlands.

Britain's teen pregnancy rate, however, is still far below that of the United States, which registers 44 births per 1,000 women aged 15-19 and are more line with English-speaking countries such as Australia and New Zealand, which respectively have 17 and 27 births per 1,000 women between 15 and 19, according to the report.

But the country's reputation as Europe's teen pregnancy capital has been an embarrassment to politicians.

In 1999 then-Prime Minister Tony Blair described Britain's record on pregnancies as shameful and vowed to turn it around.

"Put simply, you are still a child when you are 14 and, in a civilized society, children should not be having children," he said at the time. The government has since poured millions of pounds (dollars) into advertising and educational campaigns. Brook, a U.K. group that provides sexual health advice to people under 25, said teen pregnancies had fallen by about 12 percent since 1998, but more had to be done.

"It can be easy to concentrate on young women but young men need as much support and information," Brook's chief executive, Simon Blake, said.

In a move last year to tackle the high teen pregnancy rate, British education officials announced they would start introducing sex education earlier in English schools.

Beginning next year, children as in grades as low as kindergarten will be given basic sex education.

Tony Kerridge, of the sexual health group Marie Stopes International, praised the move, but local lawmaker Nigel Waterson said the pregnancy raised "huge questions" about whether British children were being educated about sex - at the expense of learning about healthy relationships.

Chantelle and Alfie have reportedly pledged to raise the child as best they can.

"We know we made a mistake but I wouldn't change it now," Chantelle was quoted by The Sun as saying.

Alfie's father, Dennis - who reportedly has nine children - said his son told him it was the first time he had sex. He was reportedly allowed to sleep over at the girl's house.

"It hasn't really dawned on him," Patten, 45, was quoted as saying in the paper.

"I will talk to him again and it will be the birds and bees talk," he said. "Some may say it's too late but he needs to understand so there is not another baby."

Britain's youngest-known father was said to be a 12-year-old boy in a suburb north of London who impregnated a young neighbor in 1998.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden: Swedish officials have vowed to step up the fight against prostitution, using a unique law that targets sex buyers instead of prostitutes.

The government announced it will spend 210 million kronor (US$35 million) toward that goal and unveiled a 36-point plan to tackle prostitution and trafficking.

"Sweden is not a good place for (your) business," Justice Minister Beatrice Ask said in a warning to those who buy sex or are involved in trafficking. "(There's) a very big risk of getting caught, and getting caught big time."

She spoke at a press conference Wednesday.

Sweden's unusual prostitution law, which allows the sale of sex but prohibits the buying, faced ridicule when it was introduced nine years ago. However, other countries are now considering emulating the Swedish model, which officials say has reduced the demand for prostitutes and reshaped attitudes toward the sex trade.

Police estimate that the number of prostitutes in Sweden dropped 40 percent from 2,500 in 1998 to 1,500 in 2003.

The plan boosts policing against sex buyers and expands rehabilitation centers for sex workers and trafficking victims. It also trains hospital workers and social services employees to deal with suspected cases of prostitution and trafficking.

Integration Minister Nyamko Sabuni noted that men are the primary buyers of sex.

"Prostitution and human trafficking for sexual purposes is a serious barrier for social equality and equality between the sexes," she said.

Under Sweden's law, paying for sex is punished by fines or up to six months in prison, plus the humiliation of public expose.

Association given task to help Sufiah

THE Government has given the task of helping Maths prodigy Sufiah Yusof, who was reported to have turned to prostitution, to the Malay Community Association of United Kingdom , according to Sinar Harian.

It has since stopped its “Save Sufiah” campaign launched in April after reports of the girl's “occupation” appeared in a London newspaper.

Deputy Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said it was difficult for the Government to help Sufiah due to certain restrictions.

“The biggest restriction was that we were unable to access her data,” said Dr Mashitah.

Other restrictions include her foreign citizenship and her own family’s difficulty in contacting her.

Sufiah, whose mother Halimaton Yusof is from Muar, Johor, made headlines when she was accepted to Oxford University at age 13.

Rape due to uncontrolled lust, not the dressing

I AM writing in response to the letter from Hassan Abdullah ”Don’t pin blame on others for evil deeds” (The Star, June 4).

I agree with his opinion that rape cases do not occur merely because of the way women dress, but it is due to uncontrolled lust.

It’s really disheartening to read some of the comments made by some shallow-minded men on women. These people put the entire blame on women for contributing to rape by revealing too much of their flesh.

Women in some foreign countries dare to dress scantily yet rape cases are far less compare with our country. Men in our country aren’t all sex maniacs, but one with great moral values and who has respect for women would be able to control his lust no matter how scantily a woman dressed.

Report: Britney Spears Sex Tape Shopped By Adnan Ghalib

We missed Adnan Ghalib.

The last time we heard from the former paparazzi boyfriend of Britney Spears, he was seen with Kathy Griffin. No clue WTF that was all about.

Oh, and there was the whole thing with that knife-wielding maniac trying to kill him. No idea what went on there or if it got resolved.

Nor do we know when and how he and Britney broke up, though we’re assuming it happened at some point, as he essentially dropped off the planet.

That is, until this week.

The National Enquirer reports he’s making one last grab at Britney Spears’ assets. No, not that newly-toned and sexy caboose. Her cash, people.

How’s he doing it? With a sex tape, of course!

Rumors say Adnan Ghalib is shopping around a Britney Spears sex tape filmed during their trip January trip to Rosarito, Mexico.

“The video starts with Britney undressing,” said an insider. “She was wearing some cheap clothes she bought down there in Rosarito. The sex wasn’t particularly kinky but Britney wears a pink wig throughout.”

Yes, of course she does.

“At one point in the tape Adnan Ghalib asks Britney to remove the pink bob but she refuses, saying ‘Take what off? There’s nothing left to take off.’”

This “insider” also thinks a Britney Spears sex tape would be the top selling celebrity sex video ever, topping even the Paris Hilton-Rick Salomon romp, 1 Night in Paris.

Not sure about that, but tell us what you think:

Does the Britney Spears sex tape exist?
Would a Britney sex tape out-sell the Paris Hilton sex tape?

Would you pay $$ to watch Adnan hit that pink-wigged mess?
If so, how much?
